A Catholic priest Padre Geronimo goes to a small town to solve some strange things that are happening in that town, things that come from the unknown, and gets involved in a romantic relationship with a young woman of the village. The story of the late jazz musician and classical pianist Nina Simone including her rise to fame and relationship with her manager Clifton Henderson. I came in with expectations about this film. They weren’t particularly high but what I did expect was to a lesser degree the music and vocal styling.

One night, Nina Simone , the great jazz singer, composer and pianist, now semiretired on the French Riviera, calls up her old friend Richard Pryor. The conversation with Pryor, who is played by Mike Epps, is a perfect example. In its wake there is a lingering flicker of curiosity. Nina Simone and Richard Pryor were friends. There are so many interesting movies hovering in the air, none of them the one onscreen. In the months leading up to its release, the film has been criticized for casting Zoe Saldana, who is also credited as an executive producer, in the title role. The real Nina Simone had much darker skin than Ms.

At its core it is an inept, cliche-ridden story edited together in a treacly and cheap manner. Set 20 years ago, Nina feels like a made-for-television movie of the era, the type which, thankfully, we rarely see any more. Despite returning to a recreated late s interview as a launch pad to recall key moments throughout her life, the bulk of this picture is set in the late s. Simone is living in the south of France, though she and her French manager take a trip to Los Angeles to confront record execs who, she feels, owe her royalties. After drawing a gun in a business meeting, she ends up restrained in a hospital where she meets a kind nurse, Clifton Henderson David Oyelowo. She ends up hiring him to be her assistant, and the pair eventually head back overseas. Clifton starts out as a wide-eyed fan, but eventually becomes her new long-suffering manager and, in time, the only true friend Nina has. While there are occasional poignant moments, Nina too quickly reverts to the cheap story beats of outrageous behaviour and quarrelling. Were the subject not Nina Simone, for whom the representation of unadulterated blackness is so key to her art, this would be less of a thing. The producers of Nina were wise to limit their prosthetics above the neck and refuse a fat suit.
